Chinese Jasmine Tea

There's a world of difference between the jasmine tea poured at Yum Cha and a genuinely well-made one. Our Chinese jasmine tea is loose leaf, scented the traditional way with fresh jasmine blossoms — never with oils or flavouring. If your only experience of jasmine tea is the everyday restaurant kind, let us spoil you a little.

Every tea in this collection is bought as new-season stock, air-freighted and stored refrigerated, so what reaches your cup keeps the bright, fragrant character it left China with.

What Is Jasmine Tea?

Real jasmine tea isn't a single product — it's a base tea scented with real jasmine flowers. Fresh blossoms are layered with the leaf over several nights so the tea slowly absorbs the fragrance, then sifted out. Good jasmine tea tastes floral and soft, never soapy or perfumed, because the aroma comes from the flower itself rather than added scent.

Most jasmine loose leaf tea uses a green tea base — which is why so many people look for jasmine green tea — but the base can also be black, each giving a different character.

Types of Jasmine Tea: Our Range

A quick guide, from lightest to fullest. If you're not sure where to start, our two best-sellers are marked.

  • Snow White — a premium jasmine green tea, refreshing and easy-drinking. A good first jasmine tea.
  • Snow White Bouquet (best-seller · our finest) — the same style, a grade up, and the best-tasting jasmine tea we carry. The white "downy" tips come from young, tender leaves — a mark of premium quality. Offered in Premium and Exclusive grades.
  • Jasmine Dragon Pearl (best-seller) — green tea leaves hand-rolled into pearls that unfurl as they steep. Also known as jasmine pearl tea, dragon pearl, green tea pearls or Buddha's Tears. High and Premium grades.
  • Jasmine Black Tea — a rarer style: fine Chinese black tea scented with fresh jasmine. Rounder and smoother, with more body.

How Chinese Jasmine Tea Is Made

Our green jasmine tea leaves come from Fujian Province in south-east China; the jasmine blossoms are harvested in Sichuan, one of the country's premium jasmine-growing regions. Dragon pearls are hand-rolled before scenting — slow, skilled work that holds the leaf's shape and fragrance.

Spring-picked leaf goes into the higher grades; autumn leaf into the everyday grades. The flowers are always fresh and seasonal, never dried-and-added.

Jasmine Tea Grades & Quality

We deliberately focus on the higher end of the quality range — our High grade is comparable to what some other sellers list as their top grade.

  • Downy white tips on Snow White Bouquet indicate young, tender leaf — and it's the best-tasting tea in this collection.
  • Grades (High / Premium / Exclusive) reflect leaf quality and scenting.
  • New-season stock, chosen by professional tasters, stored refrigerated to hold freshness.

If you're buying jasmine tea to actually taste the jasmine — not just a hint of it — grade matters more than quantity.

Jasmine Green Tea vs Jasmine Black Tea

  • Choose jasmine green tea (Snow White, Snow White Bouquet, Dragon Pearl) if you like it light, fresh and fragrant. This is the classic style most people picture — and where both our best-sellers sit.
  • Choose jasmine black tea if you prefer more body and a smoother, rounder cup — good if green tea sometimes tastes too grassy for you.

Not sure? Snow White Bouquet (green) is the crowd favourite; Jasmine Black is the one to try if you lean towards fuller teas.

What Does Jasmine Tea Taste Like?

Expect a soft floral aroma, a clean sweetness and a smooth finish. Green-based jasmine teas are brighter and more delicate; the black-based one is warmer and fuller. None should taste bitter or "perfumey" when brewed with reasonable care — that's usually a sign of lower-grade tea or over-steeping.

Jasmine Tea Benefits & Caffeine

People often ask about jasmine tea benefits. Most jasmine tea is green tea at heart, so it carries the same antioxidants (catechins) green tea is known for, alongside the calming quality many associate with jasmine's aroma. It's a light, everyday drink rather than a health product — we'd rather it earn its place by tasting good.

On caffeine in jasmine tea: there is some, since it's made from real tea leaf, but generally less than a cup of coffee. Green-based jasmine teas are lighter; jasmine black tea is a little higher.

Jasmine Tea Buying Guide: Sizes, Grades & Freshness

Every tea here comes in 50g and 100g packs. New to a style? Start with 50g; move to 100g once you've found the one you reach for. Because we store stock refrigerated, keep yours sealed, cool and away from strong odours — jasmine tea readily picks up smells from its surroundings.

Quick picks: Snow White Bouquet for the best cup, Jasmine Dragon Pearl for something to watch unfurl, Jasmine Black for a fuller body.

Jasmine Tea FAQs

Is jasmine tea green tea?

Usually, yes — most jasmine tea uses a green tea base, though ours also comes in a black tea version. So it can be either, depending on the leaf.

Does jasmine tea have caffeine?

Yes, but typically less than coffee. Green-based jasmine teas are lighter; jasmine black tea is a little stronger.

How do you make jasmine tea?

Briefly: use just-off-the-boil water for green-based jasmine, steep lightly, and don't over-brew. Each product page has full brewing and storage guidance for that specific tea.

How should I store jasmine tea?

Keep it sealed, cool and away from strong smells. Jasmine tea absorbs odours easily — which is exactly why it takes on the flower so well.

Is this the same as the tea served at Yum Cha?

Same family, different level. Restaurant jasmine tea is usually a basic grade; ours is scented with fresh blossoms and chosen for quality.
