Explore Chinese Tea by Type

Not sure where to start? Here's the whole range, family by family:

  • Green Tea — unoxidised and fresh: grassy, sweet and lively, from Dragon Well (Longjing) to Bi Luo Chun.
  • Pu-erh — Raw (Sheng) — Yunnan's traditional Pu-erh: fresh, bright and ageing, from famous single origins.
  • Pu-erh — Ripened (Shou) — dark, smooth and earthy-sweet, ready to enjoy today.
  • White Tea — barely processed and gently sweet, all soft florals and honey.
  • Oolong Tea — partly oxidised and hugely varied: from high floral (Tieguanyin) to deep roast (Da Hong Pao).
  • Black Tea — fully oxidised (China's "Red Tea"): malty, sweet and warming.
  • Jasmine Tea — Green Tea layered with fresh jasmine flowers for a fragrant, soothing cup.
  • Yellow Tea — a rare, mellow class, lightly "sealed-yellowed" for a smooth, round cup.
  • Hei Cha (Dark Tea) — post-fermented and aged: earthy, smooth and mellow, including Fu Brick and Liu Bao.

The Six Great Types of Chinese Tea

All true tea — Green, White, Yellow, Oolong, Black and Dark — comes from one plant, Camellia sinensis. What makes them so different is how the leaf is processed, and especially how much it is allowed to oxidise (and, for Dark Tea, to ferment). From lightest to deepest:

Green (绿茶) — unoxidised. The leaf is heated early to keep it fresh and green: crisp, grassy and sweet.

White (白茶) — barely processed. Simply withered and dried, for a soft, delicate, naturally sweet cup.

Yellow (黄茶) — lightly oxidised with a gentle "sealed yellowing" step that rounds off any grassy edge. Rare and mellow.

Oolong (乌龙 / 青茶) — partly oxidised, anywhere from 10% to 80%. The most varied family: green-floral at one end, dark and roasted at the other.

Black / Red (红茶) — fully oxidised. Known in China as "Red Tea" for its amber brew: malty, sweet and mellow.

Dark (黑茶 / Hei Cha) — post-fermented and aged. A living tea that keeps maturing over time — earthy, smooth and deep. Pu-erh belongs to this family.

New to Chinese Tea? How to Choose

An easy way in is to think about how bold you like your cup, from light to dark:

If you like things fresh and light, start with a Green or White Tea. If you enjoy fragrant, complex cups, Oolong is a wonderful world to explore. If you prefer something warm, smooth and mellow, reach for a Black Tea, a Dark Tea (Hei Cha) or a Ripe Pu-erh.

Chinese Tea FAQs

What's the difference between all these types of tea?

They all come from the same plant — the difference is processing, especially how much the leaf is oxidised (and, for Dark Tea, fermented). Green Tea is unoxidised and freshest; Black Tea is fully oxidised and maltiest; Oolong sits in between; Dark Tea (like Pu-erh) is post-fermented and aged.

Which Chinese tea has the least caffeine?

All true tea naturally contains some caffeine. As a rough guide, lighter, gentler teas and short steeps tend to give a milder cup. If you'd rather avoid caffeine altogether, browse our caffeine-free range.

Which tea should a beginner start with?

Match it to flavours you already enjoy — fresh and light (Green/White), fragrant (Oolong), or warm and smooth (Black, Dark or Ripe Pu-erh). A selection pack lets you try a few and find your favourite.

Where is your tea from, and how fresh is it?
