What are matcha accessories?

Matcha isn't steeped like other tea — it's whisked. That means a slightly different toolkit from the rest of your teaware.

A complete matcha set has four parts:

a wide matcha bowl (chawan) to whisk in, a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) to froth the tea,

a bamboo scoop to measure the powder,

and a stand to keep the whisk in shape.

Add ceremonial matcha green tea powder and you have everything for a creamy, café-style bowl of matcha at home.

Matcha tea sets and starter kits

matcha tea set is the easiest way to begin — one box with the bowl, whisk, scoop and stand all matched, so it doubles as a matcha starter kit and a tidy matcha green tea gift set.

Matcha needs only a handful of tools, so a set really is all most people ever need. Ours come with a generous 580ml bowl in your choice of bluecream or black ceramic, or a lightweight bamboo bowl.

Matcha bowls (chawan) and bamboo whisks (chasen)

Prefer to build your own setup?

Choose amatcha bowl on its own — our 300ml country-style chawan come in a cherry blossom or imperial blue vine design, both with a textured, wheel-pattern body that's easy to grip while whisking.

Add a100-prong bamboo matcha whisk (chasen)and you have the classic matcha bowl and whisk pairing. The wide bowl is what makes a proper froth possible — an ordinary cup is too narrow to whisk in.

Matcha bowl materials: ceramic vs bamboo

  • Ceramic matcha bowl — high-fired and food-safe for hot tea, it holds heat well and gives a smooth, stable surface to whisk against. The most popular choice, and easy to clean. Available in blue, cream and black glazes.
  • Bamboo matcha bowl — light, naturally insulating and travel-friendly, with a warm, organic feel. A nice option if you want an all-natural, lower-weight set.

How to whisk matcha green tea

  1. Sift ½–1 teaspoon of matcha powder into your matcha bowl, depending on how strong you like it.
  2. Pour in hot water at about 80°C — not boiling, which scorches the flavour and can warp a bamboo whisk.
  3. Whisk briskly in a straight back-and-forth "W" motion until the surface turns creamy with a fine froth on top.
  4. Drink straight from the bowl while it's hot.

Matcha accessories FAQs

What do I need to make matcha at home?

At a minimum, a matcha bowl, a bamboo whisk (chasen) and ceremonial matcha green tea powder. A bamboo scoop and a whisk stand make it easier and keep the whisk in shape — all four come together in our matcha tea sets, which is why a set works so well as a complete matcha starter kit.

What size matcha bowl should I choose?

A 300ml matcha bowl is ideal for a single serving, while the 580ml bowls in our sets give you more room to whisk freely. Wider bowls make it easier to build a good froth.

Why whisk matcha at 80°C and not boiling?

Boiling water turns matcha bitter and can splay or warp a bamboo matcha whisk. Water around 80°C keeps the tea sweet and the chasen in good shape.

Is a matcha set worth it, or should I buy pieces separately?

Because matcha needs only a few tools, a matcha set usually gives the best value — the bowl, whisk, scoop and stand are matched and cost less together. Buy pieces separately only if you want a specific matcha bowl design or are replacing a worn whisk.
