What is a tea pet?
A tea pet (cha chong, 茶宠) is a small clay or resin figure kept on the tea tray for good luck and companionship during Gongfu tea. You "raise" it by pouring the first rinse (tea wash) or leftover tea over it as you brew — over time, porous zisha and clay pets absorb the tea oils and develop a richer, glossier patina. It's a small, mindful ritual that makes a session feel complete.
Choosing a tea pet: material and meaning
Most of our Chinese tea pets are Yixing purple clay (zisha), which seasons beautifully with tea, while some are Dehua ceramic or heat-sensitive resin. Many also carry an auspicious meaning — the crab for "wealth from all eight directions", the persimmon for "may all things go as you wish", and the awakening lion for courage and good fortune — so they make thoughtful gifts as well as tea-table companions.
Tea pets that do more than decorate
Some of these tea pets have a clever second job: the crab and red mushroom double as a teapot lid holder, the persimmon's stem rests a tea needle or tongs, and the zisha frogs hide a fountain that squirts water as it heats. Others, like the resin figure, simply change colour when you pour hot tea over them.
Setting up your tea tray
A tea pet sits naturally alongside the rest of your Gongfu gear. Complete the table with a gong fu tea tray to catch the water, a gong fu teapot or Yixing zisha teapot to brew, and Chinese tea cups to share.
Tea pet FAQs
What is a tea pet used for?
A tea pet is a tea-tray companion for good luck and mindfulness. You pour tea wash or leftover tea over it while brewing; many also have a practical use, such as resting a teapot lid.
How do you "raise" a tea pet?
During your tea session, pour the first rinse or any leftover tea over the tea pet. Porous zisha and raw clay slowly absorb the tea oils and gain a deeper, glossier patina over time. Wipe gently with a soft tea cloth to keep it clean.
Which tea pet should I choose?
Pick by material and meaning: zisha pets season with tea and suit daily use, resin pets are fun and low-maintenance, and the auspicious designs (crab, persimmon, lion) make great gifts.
