New to Tea?

Welcome — the best way to start is simply to taste.

Rather than commit to a full-size tea you've never tried, our tasting and sample packs let you explore a whole range in small, affordable portions — all in one place. Try lots, find what you love, then buy the full size with confidence.

We're a Sydney-based family business, buying direct from the tea farms in China.

We taste widely across grades and price ranges, and only stock the teas that offer the best value for the quality — shipped fresh Australia-wide and to NZ, with free shipping over $100.

  • The Discovery Pack — the best all-rounder. Eight of our most popular teas across six main types of Chinese tea
  • Green Tea (Dragon Well & Bi Luo Chun)
  • White Tea (Fuding Silver Needle)
  • Yellow Tea (Junshan Yinzhen)
  • Oolong Tea (Tie Guan Yin & Da Hong Pao)
  • Jasmine Tea (Jasmine Pearl)

Perfect if you want to explore Chinese tea broadly.

  • Raw Pu-erh Cake Samples — 50g tasting portions of our raw (Sheng) pu-erh cakes, for exploring famous single origins one at a time.
  • Ripe Pu-erh Cake Samples — 50g tasting portions of our ripe (Shou) pu-erh cakes, an easy way to compare before buying a full cake.

How to Choose Where to Begin

Not sure which pack?

It comes down to what you're curious about:

Want to explore Chinese tea in general?

Start with the Discovery Pack — it spans light and fresh (Green, White, Yellow) through fragrant (Oolong, Jasmine) to warm and smooth (Black).

Curious about pu-erh specifically — Yunnan's famous tea?

Explore it in two steps.

First, the Pu-erh Beginner's Trial Pack helps you work out what you actually like — raw or ripe, loose or compressed.

Then, once you know your style, the 50g cake tasting portions let you compare individual cakes side by side and decide exactly which one to commit to — browse the raw cake samples or the ripe cake samples.

Why Sample First?

Tea is personal, and the best cup is simply the one you love — not the priciest or the most famous. Sampling in small sizes means you can try widely, learn your own taste, and spend on the full-size teas that are truly right for you. It's the low-cost, low-pressure way to build a tea collection you'll actually drink.

Chinese Tea Beginner FAQs

What are the different types of Chinese tea?

There are six great types — Green, White, Yellow, Oolong, Black and Dark Tea (which includes Pu-erh) — all from the same Camellia sinensis plant, differing in how the leaf is processed and oxidised.

Broadly: Green and White are the freshest and most delicate; Yellow is mellow and rare; Oolong sits in the middle, from floral to roasted; Black is warm, smooth and easy; and Pu-erh is Yunnan's aged, earthy speciality.

The Discovery Pack lets you taste right across them; see the full breakdown in All Tea.

What teas and products does Valley Green Tea sell?

We carry a full range of authentic Chinese tea — Green TeaWhite TeaYellow TeaOolong TeaBlack TeaJasmine TeaDark Tea (Hei Cha), and a deep Pu-erh range in both raw (Sheng) and ripe (Shou), as loose leaf and pressed cakes.

We also stock teaware — gaiwans, Yixing pots, cups and gift sets — everything you need to brew properly.

What's the difference between raw and ripe pu-erh?

Raw (Sheng) pu-erh is made traditionally and ages slowly over years, moving from bright and brisk when young to deep and mellow when aged.

Ripe (Shou) pu-erh is fermented to reach that smooth, earthy, mellow character much sooner, so it's approachable straight away — often the easier starting point.

The Pu-erh Trial Pack lets you taste both and decide which you prefer.

Which pack is best for a complete beginner?

The Discovery Pack — it's the widest range in one box, so you can quickly find the styles you enjoy before buying anything full-size.

If you already know you're drawn to pu-erh, start with the Pu-erh Trial Pack instead.

How much tea should I buy to begin?

Start small. A sampler or tasting pack gives you plenty for many pots without over-committing — you'll drink your way through a handful of teas, learn what you love, and only then buy the full sizes worth keeping on your shelf.

Do I need special equipment to brew Chinese tea?

No — a simple cup or a gaiwan is all you need to start, and every product page has a step-by-step brewing guide.

When you're ready to go further, our Chinese tea sets and accessories make it easy.
