What Is Pu-erh?
Pu-erh is a family of teas from the arbour tea trees of Yunnan Province.
Its defining trait is post-fermentation — much like fine wine, a good pu-erh can keep developing and improving with age.
There's huge variety within the family, shaped by where the leaf is grown and how it's made, which is exactly why tasting across styles first is so worthwhile.
The two big distinctions this pack covers:
- Raw vs Ripe: raw (Sheng) is the traditional style that ages slowly, from bright and brisk when young to deep and mellow over the years; ripe (Shou) is fermented to reach that smooth, earthy, mellow character sooner — usually the easier place to start.
- Loose vs Cake: loose leaf is quick and convenient; a pressed cake is the classic form made for ageing. Same tea family, two different experiences.
Your Next Step
Once this pack tells you what you love, go deeper.
If you're drawn to raw, explore our Raw (Sheng) pu-erh;
if ripe is your style, browse the Ripe (Shou) pu-erh.
And when you're ready to choose a specific cake, our 50g tasting portions let you compare them one by one — the raw cake samples and the ripe cake samples.
