Pu-erh Tea Accessories
What are Pu-erh tea accessories?
Unlike most teas, Pu-erh is pressed into cakes and bricks and is meant to keep ageing for years.
That calls for two kinds of tool: something to store the tea so it can breathe and ferment slowly, and something to break a piece off a hard-pressed cake when you want to brew.
This collection covers both — storage bags, baskets and units, plus Pu-erh tea knives (pins).
How to store Pu-erh tea at home
The goal of Pu-erh storage is airflow without dust, damp or strong smells.
A breathable wrap does the work: bag or basket the tea first, then keep it somewhere cool, dry and free of foreign odours.
Avoid airtight containers — they stop the slow fermentation that gives aged Pu-erh its character.
A cotton storage bag suits a single cake, while a bamboo cake basket or bamboo storage unit holds a growing collection.
Stock up on the tea itself from our raw (sheng) Pu-erh,ripened (shou) Pu-erh and hei cha collections.
Storage bags vs baskets vs storage units
- A cotton storage bag is the simplest, most affordable option — breathable, soft and ideal for a single tea cake or loose pieces. Available in medium and large.
- A bamboo cake basket is sturdier and stackable, holding 7–8 cakes while staying highly breathable.
- A bamboo storage unit with drawers is the most permanent home — furniture-grade, with room for a serious collection.
How to break a Pu-erh cake
Slide a Pu-erh tea knife (pin) into the side of the cake along a natural layer, then gently lift to release a flake — working from the edge keeps the leaves whole. For everyday cakes, a wooden-handle tea knife is light and easy; for iron cakes and bricks, the heavier stainless knife with a Sandalwood sheath gives more leverage.
Pu-erh storage materials: cotton, bamboo & more
- Breathable cotton — soft, unbleached and naturally breathable; perfect for bagging cakes and loose tea, and for keeping mini tuocha together.
- Woven bamboo — rigid, stackable and highly breathable; ideal for storing multiple cakes as they age.
- Stainless steel & Sandalwood — used in our Pu-erh tea knives for a durable point and a protective, good-looking sheath.
Completing your Pu-erh setup
Once your tea is stored and broken, pair it with the right brewing gear. Bamboo trays catch the water during gongfu sessions, and a teapot holds heat for darker, aged Pu-erh:
- Bamboo tea tray and tea tray with drawer — to catch the water
- Gong fu teapots and Yixing zisha teapots — hold heat for ripe Pu-erh
- Chinese tea sets — complete gongfu setups
Pu-erh tea accessories FAQs
Why not store Pu-erh in an airtight jar?
Pu-erh keeps fermenting slowly over years, and that needs a little airflow. Airtight storage can flatten the flavour and trap moisture, so a breathable cotton bag or bamboo basket is the traditional choice.
How do I break a hard Pu-erh cake or brick?
Slide a Pu-erh tea knife (pin) into the side of the cake along a natural layer, then gently lift to release a flake. Working from the edge keeps the leaves whole. Iron cakes and bricks are easier with a heavier sheathed knife.
What size storage bag do I need?
The medium cotton bag suits 3-5 cakes or loose pieces; the large bag holds 7-8 cakes; the bamboo basket is best for a growing collection of 7–8 cakes.
