Tea Canisters/Storage
What is a tea canister?
A tea canister(tea caddy, tea jar or tea container) is a sealed vessel for storing loose-leaf tea away from light, moisture and strong smells. Most of ours use a cork or padded lid for a semi-airtight seal — enough to keep everyday tea fresh, while still letting darker teas breathe. They're equally at home on the kitchen shelf or the tea table.
What to store in a tea caddy
A ceramic tea canister suits almost any loose tea — green, white, oolong or black — and is especially handy for pieces broken from a compressed cake or brick. For ageing Pu-erh, a breathable, unglazed raw-clay jar is ideal because it lets the tea keep fermenting. Stock up from our raw Pu-erh, ripened Pu-erh and hei cha collections.
Tea canister materials: Ge Kiln, Dehua & raw clay
- Ge Kiln ceramic — prized for its fine "cicada's wing" crackle glaze; our cube and round canisters seal with a cork-and-cotton lid.
- Dehua porcelain — smooth, fine porcelain from Fujian's famous kilns, perfect for a compact decorative tea caddy.
- Raw clay (unglazed) — coarse and breathable, so the tea can "breathe through" the wall; best for storing and ageing premium Pu-erh.
More Pu-erh storage
This collection also includes our breathable Pu-erh storage options for whole cakes — cotton storage bags, a woven bamboo cake basket and a bamboo storage unit with drawers. See the full range in Pu-erh tea accessories.
Tea canister FAQs
What is the difference between a tea canister, caddy and jar?
They're different names for the same thing — a sealed container for loose tea. "Caddy" tends to mean a smaller, decorative one; "canister" or "tea jar" a larger storage vessel. All keep tea away from light, air and odours.
Are these tea canisters airtight?
They're semi-airtight, using a cork or padded lid. That keeps everyday tea fresh while still letting darker teas like Pu-erh breathe — for those, the unglazed raw-clay jar is the better choice.
What size tea canister should I choose?
A small 150–250ml tea caddy suits a single tea you drink often; a 450ml canister holds more; and the 1.5L raw-clay jar is made for storing larger amounts of Pu-erh.
Do you ship tea canisters across Australia?
