Elegant Jasmine:
Tea That Opens Like a Flower

Other names: Elegant Jasmine, Blooming Tea, Blooming Tea Ball, Flowering Tea, Flowering Tea Ball, Jasmine Flowering Tea, Blooming Jasmine Tea, Flower Tea Ball, Artist Tea, Jasmine Flower Tea, 茉莉花茶球

What Is Blooming Tea?

Blooming tea (also called flowering tea, flower tea balls, or artist tea) is a traditional Chinese craft where green tea leaves are hand-tied around real flowers to form a tight, dry tea ball. The ball looks unassuming at first — but drop it into hot water in a clear glass vessel, and it transforms into a stunning floral display.

This particular blooming tea is scented with fresh jasmine blossoms — giving it both visual drama and the unmistakable elegant fragrance of jasmine green tea.

How the Bloom Works

When you place this jasmine flowering tea ball into a clear glass teapot or cup and pour hot water over it, the magic begins:

  • The green tea leaves slowly unfurl outward, forming a soft basket-like base at the bottom
  • From the centre, a delicate chain of real jasmine blossoms rises upward through the water
  • Within 3-5 minutes, the bloom is fully open — suspended in the glass like a tiny underwater garden
  • The water gradually turns a pale gold, infused with the elegant jasmine perfume

It is part tea, part theatre — and it never fails to impress.

Perfect for Gifts and Dinner Parties

This is one of our most popular tea gifts — and for good reason. A single blooming tea ball turns an ordinary cup of tea into a moment of wonder. It is especially loved for:

  • Dinner parties: Place a tea ball in the centre of a clear glass teapot, pour hot water in front of your guests, and watch the room go quiet as the flower opens
  • Gifts: Beautifully packaged in 5-ball or 10-ball sets — a thoughtful, low-stress present for tea lovers, hosts, and anyone who appreciates beauty
  • Special occasions: Weddings, anniversaries, afternoon teas, and quiet self-care moments
  • Children and first-timers: The visual drama makes this a wonderful introduction to tea for anyone who finds traditional brewing intimidating

Best With a Glass Teapot

The whole point of a flowering tea is to watch it bloom — so a clear glass teapot or glass infuser is essential. A standard mug or opaque pot defeats the purpose entirely.

If you don't already have one, browse our Glass Tea Infuser collection for vessels designed to showcase blooming teas at their best. A wide, tall glass shape gives the bloom the most room to open beautifully.

🍵 Brewing Guide

How to brew Elegant Jasmine Blooming Tea?

Brewing a flowering tea ball is more theatre than ritual — the whole experience is about watching the bloom unfold as much as drinking the tea. Done right, it's one of the most memorable cups of tea you'll ever serve.

The Vessel: Must Be Clear Glass

This is non-negotiable. The visual experience is the entire point of a blooming tea. Use a clear glass teapot or large glass tea infuser — never an opaque mug or ceramic pot. Browse our Glass Tea Infuser collection for vessels suited to blooming teas.

The Brewing Ritual

  • Temperature: 90-95°C. Unlike loose leaf green tea, blooming tea balls are tightly compressed and need hot water to open properly. Just-off-the-boil water works best.
  • Vessel size: Use a 400-700ml clear glass teapot or large glass infuser. The taller and wider the vessel, the more dramatic the bloom.
  • Tea ball quantity: 1 ball per pot (each ball will infuse roughly 500-700ml of tea).
  • Step 1 — Warm the Vessel: Rinse the glass teapot with hot water and discard. This helps the bloom open evenly.
  • Step 2 — Place the Ball: Gently place a single blooming tea ball in the centre of the empty teapot.
  • Step 3 — Pour the Water: Slowly pour 90-95°C water down the side of the teapot — not directly onto the ball. Fill the teapot about 3/4 full to give the bloom room to expand.
  • Step 4 — Watch It Bloom: Within 30 seconds the outer leaves will begin to soften. Over the next 3-5 minutes, the ball gradually opens. The jasmine blossoms inside slowly rise to the surface — this is the magic moment. Don't rush it; let the bloom finish before pouring.
  • Step 5 — Pour and Serve: Once fully bloomed, pour the tea into small clear glass cups so guests can see the pale gold colour. Leave the bloom in the teapot — it's now the centrepiece.
  • Step 6 — Subsequent Brews: A good blooming tea ball can be re-steeped 2-3 times. Simply top up the teapot with fresh 90°C water and steep for 2-3 minutes per additional pot. The flavour will become lighter with each infusion, but the bloom stays beautiful.

A Quick Tip for Dinner Parties

Don't brew the tea before guests arrive. Place the dry ball into the empty teapot at the table, then pour hot water in front of everyone. The reveal is the moment they'll remember.

📦 Storage & Care

Keeping Your Blooming Tea Balls Fresh

Unlike loose leaf green tea, blooming tea balls are tightly compressed and don't oxidize as quickly. But they still need basic care to stay fresh and ready to bloom:

  • Cool and Dry: Store in a cool, dry place — a pantry or kitchen cupboard away from direct sunlight is perfect. The fridge is not necessary for blooming tea balls (unlike loose leaf green tea).
  • Airtight Container: Keep the balls in a sealed bag or airtight container to protect the delicate jasmine fragrance from being absorbed by other kitchen odours. We recommend a Tea Bag Sealer for the original pouch.
  • Don't Crush: The hand-tied shape is delicate. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of the balls — a crushed ball won't bloom as beautifully.
  • Best Within 12 Months: The visual bloom will work for years, but the jasmine fragrance is at its peak within the first 12 months of opening the package.
🌿 The Origins

A Traditional Chinese Craft, Tied by Hand

  • The Craft: Blooming tea balls (called 工艺茶 in Chinese, literally "craft tea") are made entirely by hand. Skilled artisans take long, slender green tea leaves and gently bind them around fresh jasmine blossoms using a fine cotton thread, shaping each ball into a tight, dry sphere. When the ball dries, the thread holds everything in place — invisible once the bloom unfurls.
  • The Scenting: Each batch is scented with fresh jasmine blossoms multiple times — a traditional Chinese technique called 窨制 (yin zhi). The dry tea ball absorbs the jasmine perfume over repeated nights of fresh-flower scenting, giving the finished tea its unmistakable floral aroma that lingers long after the bloom has opened.
  • The Visual Tradition: Blooming tea is sometimes called "artist tea" (工艺茶) because each ball is a small work of art. The craft began in the Song Dynasty as decorative tea for the imperial court, faded for centuries, then was revived in the 1980s by Fujian artisans. Today, it is one of China's most distinctive tea gifts and a favourite at tea ceremonies around the world.
  • VGT Sourcing: For 18 years, Valley Green Tea has been the trusted destination to buy authentic Chinese tea online in Australia. Our Elegant Jasmine blooming tea balls come direct from Fujian Province, the heartland of Chinese jasmine tea production — hand-tied, fresh-scented, and individually packaged ready to bloom.
