Jasmine Dragon Pearl — Hand-Rolled Jasmine Pearl Tea

Other Names:
jasmine pearls tea, jasmine pearl green tea, dragon pearl tea, green tea pearls, jasmine dragon pearls loose tea, and Buddha's Tears.

Our jasmine pearl tea is green tea, hand-rolled into small pearls, then scented with fresh jasmine.

Each pearl opens slowly as it steeps. It's one of the prettiest teas to brew in glass.

If your only taste of jasmine tea is the kind served at Yum Cha, let us spoil you.

Hand-Rolled, Not Just Loose Leaf

Every pearl is rolled by hand from tender green tea leaves.

Rolling protects the leaf and locks in the fragrance.

Drop a few pearls in hot water and they unfurl into whole leaves. It's part of the pleasure.

Why Our Jasmine Tea Is So Fragrant — The Scenting

The aroma doesn't come from oils or flavouring. It comes from scenting (窨, xūn).

Fresh jasmine blossoms are layered with the tea over several nights. The leaf slowly drinks in the fragrance. Then the spent flowers are sifted out.

Each round is one "scenting".

More rounds means deeper, longer-lasting fragrance.

  • High grade — scented 4 times
  • Premium grade — scented 7 times

This is why a good jasmine tea has almost no visible flowers. The blossoms have done their work and been removed.

You smell the jasmine. You don't chew it.

🍵 Brewing Guide

How to Brew Jasmine Dragon Pearl

These are tightly rolled pearls of green tea.

Brew gently. Let them open in their own time.

The Vessel

A glass infuser is ideal. You can watch each pearl unfurl.

A porcelain gaiwan also works well. It gives you good control over temperature.

If you use a gaiwan, lift the lid during brewing. Don't let the tea stew under a closed lid.

Avoid unglazed zisha clay pots for jasmine tea. The porous clay drinks in the fragrance.

The Method

  • Temperature: 85°C. Never fully boiling. Let boiled water stand about 2 minutes first.
  • Ratio: about 3g to 150ml. That's roughly 8–10 pearls.
  • Awaken (optional): a quick splash of water over the pearls. Swirl. Pour off within a few seconds.
  • First steep: 5–8 seconds. Pour fast.
  • Later steeps: add about 5 seconds each round.
  • Note: the pearls open over the first two steeps. Early cups are lighter, then the flavour builds.
  • Re-steep: 4–5 times. Pearls last well.

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Boiling water. It drives off the jasmine and turns the cup bitter.
  • ❌ Brewing under a closed lid. This stews the tea and flattens the aroma.
  • ❌ Long steeps. Keep them short, especially early on.
  • ❌ Zisha clay pots. They absorb the fragrance. Use glass or porcelain.
📦 Storage & Care

Storage Care for Jasmine Dragon Pearl

Jasmine tea keeps its fragrance well when stored simply.

It also picks up other smells easily. Keep that in mind.

  • Room temperature is fine. Keep it cool, dry and dark. A pantry shelf away from sunlight is ideal. No need to refrigerate.
  • Keep it airtight. Reseal between sessions. For longer storage, a Tea Bag Sealer helps keep the pack fresh.
  • Away from light and air. An opaque tin or sealed jar protects colour and fragrance best.
  • Keep it separate. Store away from coffee, spices and anything strongly scented.
🌿 The Origins

The Origins of Our Jasmine Dragon Pearl

  • Home of Chinese Jasmine — Hengxian, Guangxi: Our jasmine is grown in Hengxian (横县) in Guangxi, south-west China — widely known as the "Jasmine Capital of China". Its warm climate, gentle hills and steady rainfall give the flowers a rich, clean fragrance, and local jasmine tea holds a recognised geographical-indication status.
  • Hand-Rolled Pearls: Tender green tea leaves are rolled into pearls by hand before scenting. It's slow, skilled work. It holds the leaf's shape and locks in fragrance.
  • The Craft — Scenting (窨): The pearls are scented with fresh, in-season jasmine over several rounds. 4 times for High grade. 7 times for Premium. Each round layers fresh blossoms with the leaf, then the flowers are sifted out.
  • VGT Sourcing: For 18 years, Valley Green Tea has been a trusted place to buy authentic loose leaf Chinese tea online in Australia. We buy new-season stock and air-freight it fresh to Sydney. Explore the rest of our jasmine tea collection.
