Yixing Zisha Teapot — Pearl Top, Black Star Purple Clay
Other Name:Yixing Teapot, Zisha, Purple Clay Teapot, 紫砂壶, 紫砂壺, 宜兴紫砂, 宜興紫砂, 紫泥壶,紫泥,黑星紫泥,生紫泥
About this teapot
A neat, well-proportioned Yixing zisha teapot with a round body topped by a pearl-shaped knob — the "Pearl Top" that gives it its name.
Its straight spout pours fast and cleanly and cuts off sharply, which suits the quick-in, quick-out rhythm of gongfu brewing. This one is semi-handmade in Yixing by artist Shen Dan. Also known as a purple sand teapot.
About Black Star Purple Clay
Black Star Purple Clay belongs to the purple clay (Zi Ni) family, but carries more quartz, mica and hematite than ordinary purple clay. Fired at a high 1180–1200°C, the dense hematite grains form fine black flecks across the body — the "black stars" that give the clay its name. The result is a sandy, characterful clay with a well-developed double-pore structure and even better breathability than standard purple clay.
Best tea for a Black Star Purple Clay Teapot
As a purple-clay pot, it is a versatile all-rounder that locks in aroma. Its mini size is ideal for precise single person gongfu sessions of Wuyi rock Oolong or Phoenix Dan Cong, an aromatic Black tea, or a Pu-erh. Following the one-pot-one-tea tradition, keep it for a single type once you choose.
Hand-made vs semi-handmade Yixing Zisha Teapots
Fully hand-made Zisha Teapots involve a long, complex craft, so their prices are naturally very high. Fully machine-made pots sit at the other extreme — mass-produced and, to our eye, without soul.
To find teapots that are a genuine pleasure to use, finely detailed, yet not overly costly, we chose semi-handmade Yixing Zisha Teapots — the body is shaped with the help of a mould, then the details are carved and finished entirely by hand. You keep the refined craftsmanship while the price stays fair. We do not sell fully machine-made teapots.
Whether semi-handmade or fully hand-made, every teapot we carry is made from genuine, natural Yixing Zisha ore clay — nothing artificial in the material.
