This teapot's clay: Duan Ni (Beige Clay)

A sandy, highly breathable beige clay — this one in a calm grey-green (Qing Hui) tone — with a rich texture that softens and rounds a brew. Best for Green, White, Yellow and lighter Oolong. Because zisha takes on a tea's character over time, the tradition is one pot, one tea.

About the Olive shape

The Olive is a classic Yixing zisha teapot shape — tapered at both ends and full in the middle, just like an olive. This one is sturdy and understated, with a straight spout, a ring handle, a drum-shaped lid and a matching olive-form knob that settles naturally into the lid, standing on a neat ring foot. Semi-handmade in Yixing by artist Shen Dan. Also known as a purple sand teapot.

About Qing Hui Duan Ni clay

Qing Hui Duan Ni ("grey-green clay") is a variety within the Duan Ni (beige clay) family, from an ore seam that lies between Duan Ni and purple clay — which gives it a slightly deeper, grey-green tone. It is fine and mellow, with a pronounced double-pore structure and a high iron content that fires to its distinctive grey-green colour.

This clay has been aged for around 30 years, and tea brewed in it comes through gentle, smooth and sweetly rounded, with a long finish and plenty of that mellow "old-clay" character.

Best tea for a Duan Ni Beige Clay Teapot

As a Duan Ni beige-clay pot, its breathable body suits lighter, fresher teas. Brew a fresh Green tea, a White tea, a Yellow tea or a lighter Oolong. Following the one-pot-one-tea tradition, keep it for a single type once you choose.

Hand-made vs semi-handmade Yixing Zisha Teapots

Fully hand-made Zisha Teapots involve a long, complex craft, so their prices are naturally very high. Fully machine-made pots sit at the other extreme — mass-produced and, to our eye, without soul.

To find teapots that are a genuine pleasure to use, finely detailed, yet not overly costly, we chose semi-handmade Yixing Zisha Teapots — the body is shaped with the help of a mould, then the details are carved and finished entirely by hand. You keep the refined craftsmanship while the price stays fair. We do not sell fully machine-made teapots.

Whether semi-handmade or fully hand-made, every teapot we carry is made from genuine, natural Yixing Zisha ore clay — nothing artificial in the material.
