This authentic Chinese Gai-Wan is made of fine Yixing Zi Sha (purple sand 紫砂), a premium Chinese clay for tea vessels.
Gaiwan is traditionally used as a tea making vessel, especially during Kung Fu tea tasting. The fact it has a wide open allows ideal visual space to inspect the tea leaves which is believed to be highly associated with the tea quality. The steam cumulated on its lid during tea brewing is considered to be the best place to test the tea's aroma - the very reason the lid is lifted and sniffed during a classid Kung-Fu tea tasting.
