Botanic name: Gynostemma Pentaphyllum

Other names: Jiao Gu Lan, 5-leaf ginseng, Southern ginseng, miracle grass, sweet tea vine.

What exactly is this plant?

Jiao Gu Lan is a wild vine from Asia. Fun fact: back in the Ming Dynasty (around 1406), it was actually recorded as a ‘Famine Saving Herb’ because it’s so packed with nutrients. Fast forward a few centuries, and locals started calling it the ‘herb of immortality’. We usually just call it Southern Ginseng. It's been a staple in traditional Chinese culture for hundreds of years.

The Honest Benefits (Why we actually drink it):

Look, there are a lot of wild medical claims out there online—we've even seen old laboratory reports about it making mice swim further! But we like to keep it real here. We drink this Jiao Gu Lan herbal tea because it genuinely makes you feel good, without any harsh side effects.

  • The perfect wind-down: It has absolutely zero caffeine. If you need a calming, soothing cuppa before bed to switch your brain off, this is it.

  • Everyday balance: It’s a great, clean brew to help you feel light and refreshed. A lot of our regulars use it as a natural, everyday way to balance out a heavy diet.

  • Steady vitality: It offers a gentle, natural lift to help you feel more grounded, resilient, and ready for a busy day.

The science bit, kept simple:

If you’re into the wellness scene, you’ve probably heard the buzzword "adaptogen". Jiao Gu Lan is famous for being a powerful natural adaptogen and is absolutely loaded with antioxidants. In plain English? An adaptogen is just a herb that helps your body deal with everyday stress and fatigue, bringing you back to a state of balance. Add in the antioxidants, and you’ve basically got a natural daily defence system in a teacup.

Our Premium Loose Leaf Difference:

What makes this specific batch special? This is our premium loose leaf Jiao Gu Lan. We only use full, premium whole leaves and process them using the exact same traditional methods used for top-tier Tie Guan Yin Oolong tea. The result is a beautiful, light roast with a naturally sweet, lingering taste that you just don't get from standard chopped herbs.

Preparation guide for loose Jiao Gu Lan:

Treat this like a proper Kung Fu tea:

  • Use ½ a teaspoon of the tea leaves for one person (or 1-2 teaspoons for a teapot, depending on how strong you like it).

  • The Rinse: Add a splash of hot water just to cover the leaves, wait about 5 seconds, and pour that liquid away. (This "wakes up" the tightly rolled leaves).

  • The Brew: Now, add freshly boiled water and let it steep for about 20-30 seconds before pouring.

  • Don't throw the leaves away! You can steep these premium leaves up to 3 times. Just add about 10 seconds to the brewing time for each additional round.

Caution:

We always play it safe: we recommend skipping this herbal tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It's always best to stick to the absolute basics and keep things drug-free during those times!
