Purple Gold Oil Spot Jian Zhan: A Handmade Tenmoku Tea Cup

Can't wait to introduce this unforgettable master tea cup to you! If I were going to spoil myself with one cup worth holding for a lifetime, this would be the one.

It's not just a tea cup. It's a Jian Zhan, handcrafted and fired at 1300°C. The kiln creates every pattern, so no two cups are ever the same. The one you receive will be a one-of-a-kind piece, just for you.

This one came out in purple and gold, and I can't take my eyes off it. Hundreds of shimmering spots in violet, silver and rose gold crowd together like fish scales, separated by fine blue-black lines. Look inside and they swirl down to a bright silver centre, like gazing into a tiny galaxy. That's the magic of a purple gold oil spot glaze.

What Is Jian Zhan?

Jian Zhan is a black-glazed tea cup that dates back to Song-dynasty China, about a thousand years ago, when it was the most fashionable teaware of its time. Perhaps it's simply so beautiful, with unforgettable colours that never appear the same way twice, it has been treasured ever since.

A true Jian Zhan is defined by three things: iron-rich local clay, a natural mineral glaze, and a firing of around 1300°C that transforms the glaze inside the kiln.

Where Do Jian Zhan's Colours Come From?

Here's the part that amazes me most: there's no paint and no brush. Every colour on a Jian Zhan is created by fire, earth and iron working together in the kiln.

Iron is the soul. Jian Zhan is made from a special local clay that is unusually rich in iron, far richer than the clay used for ordinary porcelain, and the glaze is full of iron too. Because of this, before going into the kiln every cup looks almost the same: plain, dull and dark.

Fire is the paintbrush. Inside the kiln, at around 1300°C, the potter carefully limits the oxygen. Starved of air, the flames pull oxygen out of the iron in the glaze. The iron starts to move, rising and gathering like oil on water, then flowing down the cup as the glaze melts. That's how patterns like hare's fur and oil spot are born. No one can fully control it, which is why no two cups are alike.

Light is the magic. As the cup cools, the iron forms tiny crystals on the surface. When light hits them, it splits into shimmering colours, the same way a soap bubble shows a rainbow. That's why your cup seems to change colour every time you tilt it.

Take a closer look: every spot, streak and shimmer was painted by fire, and no two cups will ever match.

And the colours keep growing.

With daily use, tea slowly leaves a soft sheen on the glaze. Over time, your cup becomes smoother, warmer, and even more beautiful. Tea lovers call this "raising the cup" (养盏).

Why Choose a Jian Zhan Over an Ordinary Tea Cup?

Your tea tastes better. Jian Zhan has thick, iron-rich walls that hold heat beautifully, so your tea stays hot and its aroma keeps unfolding, sip after sip.

It gets more beautiful with you. Remember "raising the cup"? The more you drink from it, the more the glaze glows, and some cups even develop a soft rainbow sheen. Your Jian Zhan slowly becomes like no one else's.

Solid and made to last. Thick and reassuringly heavy, a Jian Zhan sits steady in your hand, stands up to everyday use, and stays comfortable to hold even with hot tea.

What Tea Goes Best in a Jian Zhan?

A Jian Zhan shines with teas brewed hot and rich in colour:

  • Wuyi rock tea (oolong): the perfect match. The heat brings out its famous mineral, floral character. → Shop oolong tea
  • Pu-erh, especially ripe pu-erh: deep, sweet and mellow. It's also the best tea for "raising the cup". → Shop Ripe Pu-erh
  • Chinese black tea: the dark glaze makes its bright red liquor glow, and the warmth lifts its sweet aroma. → Shop black tea
  • Aged white tea: its jujube and honey notes open up beautifully. → Shop white tea

Skip green and yellow teas. They're delicate and need cooler water, and a Jian Zhan holds so much heat that it can dull their fresh, delicate flavour.

A few little tips: warm your cup with hot water before pouring tea.

If you can, keep one cup for one type of tea, so the glaze develops its own character. After use, a rinse with warm water and air-drying is all it needs.

FAQs

Is this Jian Zhan handmade?
Yes. Each cup is thrown and trimmed by hand in Jianyang, Fujian, then fired at 1300°C.

Will my cup look exactly like the photos?
Not exactly, and that's the beauty of it. Every glaze forms naturally in the kiln, so your cup's spots and colours will be uniquely its own.

What's the difference between Jianzhan and tenmoku?
They're the same family of cups. Jianzhan is the Chinese name and tenmoku is the Japanese name. A true Jianzhan comes from Jianyang in Fujian.

Can I use it for coffee or other drinks?
Of course. It's lovely for coffee, matcha or sake too.

Why does a magnet stick to it?
Because the clay and glaze are naturally rich in iron, the very thing that creates its colours.

How do I care for my Jian Zhan?
Hand wash only, and keep it out of the microwave and dishwasher. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as pouring boiling water into a cold cup.

Does it make a good gift?
Absolutely. Every Jian Zhan comes in a premium gift box, ready to give, and no one else in the world will have the same cup.
