Japanese Genmaicha:
The Popcorn Tea

Other names: Genmaicha, Japanese Genmaicha, Popcorn Tea, Brown Rice Green Tea, Roasted Rice Tea, 玄米茶

What Is Genmaicha?

Genmaicha (玄米茶) is a traditional Japanese blend of sencha-style green tea + toasted brown rice.

During roasting, some of the rice grains "pop" open and bloom into tiny white puffs, looking just like miniature popcorn — which is how it earned its English nickname, Popcorn Tea.

It's one of the most approachable, comforting green teas in the world.

The toasted rice mellows the sharper edges of green tea, adding a warm, nutty, slightly sweet character that pairs beautifully with everyday meals.

A Story From Old Japan

Genmaicha was born out of everyday Japanese kitchens centuries ago. When tea leaves were precious and expensive, families and Buddhist monks would mix them with toasted brown rice to stretch the supply — a humble, resourceful invention that turned what was scarce into something delicious.

Over time, what began as a frugal household custom became a beloved national tradition.

Today, Genmaicha is enjoyed across all of Japan — from tea masters to office workers to grandmothers — and increasingly across the world. It is comfort in a cup, with a story of ingenuity baked into every leaf.

What to Expect

Genmaicha is one of the easiest green teas to fall in love with. The flavour is unmistakable:

  • Toasty & nutty: A warm, biscuit-like aroma straight from the roasted brown rice — almost like fresh popcorn
  • Mellow & vegetal: The green tea base contributes a soft, grassy freshness underneath
  • Buttery sweetness: A gentle, lingering sweet finish — no astringency, no harshness
  • Low caffeine: The rice naturally dilutes the green tea, making this one of the lowest-caffeine green teas available — perfect for afternoons and evenings
  • Pale golden liquor: Light, clear, and inviting in the cup

If you find pure green teas a touch too grassy or astringent, Genmaicha is the gentlest way in. It pairs effortlessly with light meals, sushi, salads, biscuits, and quiet afternoons.

🍵 Brewing Guide

How to brew Japanese Genmaicha perfectly?

Genmaicha is one of the most forgiving green teas to brew. The toasted brown rice mellows the green tea, so the cup stays balanced even if your water is a little hot or your steep is a little long. Perfect for daily drinking.

The Vessel: Clarity & Control

To watch the rice puffs float and the green leaves slowly unfurl, we highly recommend using one of our Tea Infusers. They give you full visual enjoyment while letting you separate the leaves cleanly for repeat brews.

The Brewing Ritual (Using a Glass Tea Infuser)

  • Temperature: 80°C - 85°C. Slightly hotter than pure sencha — the rice needs heat to release its toasty character, but boiling water will still scorch the green tea.
  • Ratio: A golden ratio of 1:50. For a 190ml Glass Tea Infuser, use 4g of Genmaicha.
  • Step 1 – Warm the Soul: Rinse your glass infuser with hot water and discard to warm the vessel.
  • Step 2 – The Leaves: Gently place the 4g of Genmaicha (green leaves + rice grains) into the inner chamber.
  • Step 3 – Gentle Pour: Pour your 80-85°C water gently down the inner glass wall. Watch the rice grains bob up to the surface — that's perfectly normal.
  • Step 4 – The Release (1st Brew): Leave the lid off so the tea can breathe. Let it steep for about 40-60 seconds — long enough for the rice to release its toasty aroma. Lift the inner chamber out and rest it on the overturned lid. Enjoy the warm, biscuity first sip!
  • Step 5 – Subsequent Brews: For the 2nd brew, steep for 30 seconds. For the 3rd brew, add 10-15 more seconds. The rice will keep releasing flavour for 2-3 infusions.

Iced Genmaicha is exceptional too: Brew double-strength, pour over ice, finish with a slice of lemon. The toasty rice + bright tea + citrus is a perfect summer combination.

📦 Storage & Care

Protecting the Delicate Freshness

Premium green tea is exceptionally delicate and acts like a "sponge" for odours. The toasted brown rice in Genmaicha is also sensitive to moisture — keep both safe with the same care:

  • The Fridge is Best: To maintain the lush flavour and aroma, we strongly recommend storing your tea in the refrigerator.
  • Airtight Seal: Ensure the bag is perfectly sealed. We highly recommend using a Tea Bag Sealer to lock out moisture and persistent fridge odours.
  • The Golden Rule (Crucial): When removing tea from the fridge, wait a while before opening the bag. Allowing the leaves to reach room temperature prevents condensation from forming on the leaves, which would ruin the tea instantly.
🌿 The Origins

A Resourceful Japanese Tradition

  • The Story: Genmaicha (玄米茶) is a centuries-old Japanese blend, born when families and Buddhist monks began mixing toasted brown rice into their precious green tea to stretch the supply. • The Composition: Two simple ingredients, carefully blended: steam-processed loose leaf green tea (the same sencha-style base as our standalone Japanese-Style Sencha) and roasted brown rice. During roasting, some of the rice grains pop open into tiny puffs — earning Genmaicha its English nickname, "Popcorn Tea."
