Japanese Genmaicha (Popcorn Tea) — Loose Leaf Green Tea with Brown Rice
Japanese Genmaicha:
The Popcorn Tea
Other names: Genmaicha, Japanese Genmaicha, Popcorn Tea, Brown Rice Green Tea, Roasted Rice Tea, 玄米茶
What Is Genmaicha?
Genmaicha (玄米茶) is a traditional Japanese blend of sencha-style green tea + toasted brown rice.
During roasting, some of the rice grains "pop" open and bloom into tiny white puffs, looking just like miniature popcorn — which is how it earned its English nickname, Popcorn Tea.
It's one of the most approachable, comforting green teas in the world.
The toasted rice mellows the sharper edges of green tea, adding a warm, nutty, slightly sweet character that pairs beautifully with everyday meals.
A Story From Old Japan
Genmaicha was born out of everyday Japanese kitchens centuries ago. When tea leaves were precious and expensive, families and Buddhist monks would mix them with toasted brown rice to stretch the supply — a humble, resourceful invention that turned what was scarce into something delicious.
Over time, what began as a frugal household custom became a beloved national tradition.
Today, Genmaicha is enjoyed across all of Japan — from tea masters to office workers to grandmothers — and increasingly across the world. It is comfort in a cup, with a story of ingenuity baked into every leaf.
What to Expect
Genmaicha is one of the easiest green teas to fall in love with. The flavour is unmistakable:
- Toasty & nutty: A warm, biscuit-like aroma straight from the roasted brown rice — almost like fresh popcorn
- Mellow & vegetal: The green tea base contributes a soft, grassy freshness underneath
- Buttery sweetness: A gentle, lingering sweet finish — no astringency, no harshness
- Low caffeine: The rice naturally dilutes the green tea, making this one of the lowest-caffeine green teas available — perfect for afternoons and evenings
- Pale golden liquor: Light, clear, and inviting in the cup
If you find pure green teas a touch too grassy or astringent, Genmaicha is the gentlest way in. It pairs effortlessly with light meals, sushi, salads, biscuits, and quiet afternoons.
