All teas are made of the leaves of the same plant called Camellia sinensis. One magic of these leaves is that they can mimic the natural fragrances and perfumes of certain blossoms, fruits and plants when processed properly. The quality of these natural perfumes becomes an important indicator during the quality grading of the teas.
Earl Grey was first known to the west about 200 years ago as traditional black tea scented by the bergamot orange oil to imitate the more expensive version of certain authentic Chinese black teas. It has since become a blend of its own.
Its flavour is black tea based, with a taste of a fragrant citrus fruit (bergamot orange oil). Addition of milk is recommended for this brew.
