Chinese Gongfu Gaiwan Tea Set – Jun Kiln Charcoal
Chinese Gongfu Gaiwan Tea Set – Jun Kiln Charcoal
This is a ceramic gaiwan set in a deep charcoal black — made from Jun Kiln ware, one of the famous wares of the Song dynasty. The colour isn't painted on. It forms in the heat of the kiln, in a process called yaobian (kiln transformation), so no two pieces ever come out the same. Yours will be one of a kind.
The surface is smooth as porcelain, with no crackle — a deep, even charcoal with subtle movement in the glaze. Understated and easy to live with, it's high-fired and food-safe for hot tea, and makes a quietly special tea set gift for anyone who likes things with a bit of history behind them.
This is a full gong fu set: a 150ml gaiwan to brew in, a fairness cup to share from, a strainer to catch the leaves, and six cups for the table. Everything you need for gong fu cha with family or friends.
What tea to drink with this set
The glazed inside is neutral and won't hold flavour, so you can brew almost anything and switch freely. It's happiest with lighter, fragrant teas:
- Green tea and yellow tea — pour quickly and the leaves stay sweet, never stewed
- White tea — gentle with silver needle and other soft styles
- Oolong tea — short steeps draw out the florals
- Jasmine tea — the open bowl lifts the scent
Black tea and everyday pu-erh work too. For darker, aged teas, clay teaware suits them better.
