What is Yixing Zisha teapot

YiXing: an area in east China

Zisha: a special clay produced in the YiXing area, translated as purple sand in English.

The un-glazed clay teapot made of Yixing ZiSha is considered to be the premium vessel for brewing premium teas. Yixing clay teapot has had a production history in China for more than 1000 years. Their unique characteristics that separates them from the rest is the ZiSha clay, when fired, leaves small cavities embedded in the clay to allow the teas to ‘breathe through’. This turns the tea brewing into a live process to  avoid a ‘sealed stew’, which is critical to produce a refreshing cup of premium tea.

ZiSha teapot making has advanced into an art of its own in China, to the extent that there are ZiSha teapot artists graded according to their expertise, certificates awarded for individual teapots and samples filed to document the clay used for certain teapots. An example of this is that a teapot made by the historical ZiSha artist Gu-Jing-Zhou (顧景舟) was auctioned for a price more expensive than gold if calculated gram to gram.

Hints for using:

ZiSha teapot’s unglazed surfaces absorb traces of the content used in the teapot and store them in the teapot wall.

  1. Use only hot water for washing, avoid detergents to avoid the detergents being retained in the teapot
  2. One teapot for one tea type only wherever possible to avoid cross flavour contamination
  3. To avoid the lid falling off and break, secure the lid to the handle (as shown in the image)

Yixing Zisha teapots are the premium teapots for all premium teas, especially the teas that can do with a good brew, such as Oolong, certain black teasPu-erh teas and Hei Cha
