Product: Rou Gui - Wu Yi Tea

Rou Gui (Wu Yi tea) belongs to the famous Wu Yi Oolong tea group.  It has a distinctive roasted fruit aroma that will last for many steepings.

Rou Gui is one of the Wu Yi teas. Like Da Hong Pao, because it is semi-fermented, it is under the category of Oolong. Since it is produced in Wu Yi mountains’ rocky areas, it also belongs to a sub-category of Oolong call ‘Wu Yi Rock Teas’. It is characterised by strong stretched leaves and rich dark red color. Apart from all the characteristics of high quality Oolong teas (clear liquid, refreshing first and after taste and fragrant aroma), it has also the distinctive feature of ‘Wu Yi Rock teas’ – Yan Yun (see below).

Yan Yun: Yan – rock; Yun – Rhyme. It is talking about a special feature of the ‘Rock Teas’. One could describe it as: dry, clear, clean, elegant. When Wu Yi tea is graded according to quality, a fundamental factor is the place of its production. There are three classified grades: full rock tea, half rock tea and plain tea. The locals will describe the plain tea as ‘having a muddy taste’ or lack of Yan Yun. The appreciation of the ‘Yan Yun’, like many other aspects of tea enjoyments come with experience.

Excellent tea that is a true pleasure to drink. I probably make it stronger than recommended, but it tolerates long and short steepings, each creating
a tea of exceptional taste and quality. Highest recommendation!
