Elements with significant impact on Pu-erh tea's aging process
Not all Pu-erh teas age well.
Following are the three elements that play crucial roles in a Pu-erh tea's conversion, especially at the late stage:
- The quality of the tea leaves. Most of the Pu-erh tea consumers would have head of Pu-erh hills (山头茶). Different areas of the Yunnan Province produce different tea trees. The crops harvested variate in their qualities. A low quality tea can never turn into a premium one no matter how much it is aged.
- The processing of the tea leaves. A good method will maximize the potentials for the late conversion/aging.
- Storage conditions. Bad storage conditions can damage Pu-erh teas permanently. (eg, moldy conditions)
