Zi Sha teapot

Other names: Chinese Terra-cotta Teapot, Purple Sand Teapot

The premium teapot, the Zi Sha teapot, belongs to a class made from a special clay called Zi Sha (which translates as purple sand).

Zi Sha teapots rank top of the range when it comes to brewing quality teas. The unique characteristic that separates it from the rest is that Zi Sha clay, when fired, leaves small cavities embedded in the clay to allow the teas to ‘breathe’, thus turning the tea brewing into a live process, avoiding a ‘sealed stew’, and contributing to the freshness of the tea.

Zi Sha teapot making has advanced into an art of its own in China, to the extent that there are Zi Sha teapot artists (graded according to their expertise), with certificates for individual teapots and sample files to document the clay used in the making of each one.

Hints for using:

Zi Sha teapot’s unglazed surfaces absorb traces of tea and create some complex and pleasant flavour.

  1. Use only hot water for washing, avoid detergents;
  2. One teapot for one tea type only wherever possible to avoid flavour contamination.
